Beat The Clock-Low-fat Pantry:
These ingredients have little or no fat and should be in everyone’s pantry.
- Vinegars—from balsamic to mango
- Lemons and limes—peels and juice
- Tomatoes—fresh, canned, or dried
- Capers—small nonpareil, if possible
- Beans—from black to pinto
- Onion Family—garlic, onions, scallions, and shallots
- Fresh Herbs—especially basil, flat-leaf parsley, thyme, tarragon, rosemary, chives, dill, and cilantro
- Spices—especially black pepper, sea salt, cumin, ginger, curry powder, nutmeg, hot pepper (like cayenne or red pepper flakes), saffron, and paprika
- Mustards—from Dijon to honey mustard
- Roasted Red Bell Peppers—or pimientos
- Wine and Spirits- especially dry vermouth, sherry, and brandy
- Fat-free stocks and broths
